Nobel Prize in Physics 2014

The Nobel Prize in Physics 2014 was awarded jointly to 3 Scientists  "for the invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources". The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2014 to Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura. This year’s Nobel Laureates are rewarded for having invented a new energy-efficient and envi-ronment-friendly light source – the blue light-emitting diode (LED). In the spirit of Alfred Nobel the Prize rewards an invention of greatest benefit to mankind; using blue LEDs, white light can be created in a new way. The advent of LED lamps have more long-lasting and more efficient alternatives to older light sources.

Make in India

PM Narendra Modi’s ambitious campaign to turn India into a global manufacturing hub plans aims to develop infrastructure and make it easier for companies to do business. The hope is to bump up manufacturing from 15 percent of GDP (gross domestic product) to 25 percent. But the challenges were highlighted by a seemingly small gaffe: The project was launched with brochures distributed on a smart looking USB flash drive/Pen drives that was made in China. India imports 2-3rds of its electronics, mostly from China. Most American of products, from the world’s most valuable company, Apple, is famously designed in California, made in China. Both making and services now span enormous global networks, with pockets of strong expertise (like India, in services) supplying to the world. 

So, the enormous spend and resources for “Make in India” would give better returns elsewhere. Such as in our services industry. Or in building up a ecosystem for renewable-energy services and products, so that by 2020, India can dominate that sector.

On PM's "Make in India" campaign, Harish H V, partner, Grant Thornton India, said, "India desperately needs to grow its shrunken manufacturing sector to create jobs for its huge population particularly those of the youth to prevent the demographic dividend from becoming a social disaster. Hence the make in India campaign is critical. This needs to be more than a slogan but must become the key mantra for the Central and State Governments.

The new initiatives that are under way are creation of National Industrial Corridor Development Authority, and identification of five new smart cities on the Delhi Mumbai Industrial corridor. The government has also given approval to seventeen national investment and manufacturing zones.

The campaign launch was attended by a wide array of global as well as Indian industry leaders. RIL chairman Mukesh Ambani said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi motivates a billion Indians to dream and do." Similarly, other captains of the industry also showered praises on Modi. Industrailist Kumar Mangalam Birla said the country needed to do a lot of catching up on the manufacturing sector.

Badminton

Parupalli Kashyap: Leaded Singapore’s Derek Wong 21-14, 11-21, 21-19 to clinch the gold. The first Indian man in 32 years to win badminton gold at the Games.

Athletics

 
Vikas Gowda: became the first Indian man to win a field event  gold medal at the Common wealth Games. Gowda threw the discus to 63.64m to clinch the gold medal.

Squash

Dipika Pallikal and Joshana Chinappa leaded England’s Jenny Duncalf and Laura Massaro 11-6, 11-8 in straight sets. Pair gave India their first squash medal in the Common wealth Games.

Wrestling

Yogeshwar Dutt: Men’s wrestling, 65 kg freestyle …after leading Canada’s Jevon Balfour in the final.

Sushil Kumar: Men’s wrestling, 75kg freestyle Sushil Kumar leaded Qamar Abbas of Pakistan. In just 107 minutes Sushil trounced his opponent to take home gold.

Amit Kumar leaded Nigerian Ebikweminomo Welson in the final of Men’s wrestling, 57kg freestyle. Amit Indian Gold Medal Winners List 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Babita Kumari: In Women’s wrestling; 55 kg freestyle. Babita Kumari beat Canada’s Brittanee Laverdure by 9-2 in the finals for the coveted gold medal.

Vinesh Phogat: Women’s wrestling, 48kg freestyle. 19  Years old Vinesh Phogat leaded Yana Rattigan of England by 11-8 to be part of the glorious 15.

Shooting
Jitu Rai:Men’s shooting, 50 m Pistol Jitu gathering a sum of 194.1 points won gold for his nation. Gurpal Singh with 187.2 points settled with silver in this category.

Abhinav Bindra: Men’s 10m Air Rifle former Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra claimed his first individual gold at the commonwealth Games when he finished witha final games record score of 205.3.

Rahi Sarnobat: It was an all-Indian affair in the final of Women’s shooting 25 m Pistol event. Rahi Sarnobat leaded Anisa Sayyed to clinch the gold medal.

Apurvi Chandela: In Women’s shooting, 10 m Air Rifle. Apurvi beat her compatriot Ayonika Paul to win the gold medal.

Weightlifting

Satish Sivalingam: In Men’s weightlifting, 77 kg with a full lift of 328 kg to claim gold medal while Ravi Katulu lifted sum of 317 kg to win silver medal.

Sukhen Dey: On the 1st day of the competition Sukhen Dey in Men’s weightlifting 56 kg set claimed gold medal by lifting a sum of 248 kg.

K Sanjita Chanu:Women’s weightlifting 48 kg set K Sanjita Chanu with a full lift of 173 kg won the prized gold medal.
